The human right to adequate housing is more than just four walls and a roof. It is the right of every woman, man, youth and child to gain and sustain a safe and secure home and community in which to live in peace and dignity
~Human Right Factsheet 21: The Right to Adequate Housing
Adequate housing is an integral element of the right to a “standard of living adequate for the heath and well-being” (Article 25, Universal Declaration of Human Rights). While the understanding of “adequate housing” is influenced by many varying factors, certain principles apply everywhere: housing should be affordable, accessible to services, habitable, secure to tenants, and culturally adequate.
