HRE 2020

HRE USA is proud to be a member of the global civil society coalition  HRE 2020 that promotes HRE through advocacy, capacity building and resource development both in the U.S. and in other countries.

It works with civil society, governments and international organizations to support and strengthen the monitoring and implementation of international standards and commitments on human rights education, including the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training and the World Programme for Human Rights Education.

In September 2014, HRE USA worked closely with HRE 2020 to submit the first Universal Period Review (UPR) stakeholder report on human rights education in the United States. “The opportunity to be involved in an HRE stakeholder review as part of a UPR was an extraordinary learning experience for me and other members of the Human Rights USA network. The HRE 2020 Indicator Framework was a valuable tool for our organizing our thinking around data collection. This, combined with experience of other member of HRE 2020 in preparing these reports, was an essential contribution to our successfully completing the submission to the OHCHR” said Felisa Tibbitts, Founder and Senior Advisor of HREA and Steering Committee member of HRE USA.

The year 2020, one year before the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training, will be a key year to assess the achievement of governments, international institutions and civil society to provide access to quality human rights education.

HRE 2020 objectives:

  • To increase the awareness of human rights education commitments within civil society, governments, treaty bodies and other stakeholders;
  • To strengthen human rights education commitments and mainstream the monitoring and reporting of such commitments into international human rights mechanisms;
  • To build a civil society coalition which supports and strengthens the capacity of civil society to use international human rights mechanisms, instruments, standards and policies to hold governments accountable for their human rights education commitments;
  • To strengthen the capacity of governments and treaty bodies to understand and assess government commitments to implement human rights education.
