Poverty

So long as every fifth inhabitant of our planet lives in absolute poverty, there can be no real stability in the world.

Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General

Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR,1948) states thatEveryone has the right to a standard or living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family.” However, this right remains largely unrealized worldwide, largely due to poverty. Roughly one third of all human deaths, some 18 million annually, are due to poverty-related causes, with children under five accounting for nearly 60% of the annual death toll from poverty-related causes. Poverty affects not only the realization of social and economic rights, but also civil and political rights as poor people across the world are often socially excluded and marginalized from political power and processes.
