Death Penalty

For centuries the death penalty, often accompanied by barbarous refinements, has been trying to hold crime in check; yet crime persists.

~Albert Camus, Resistance, Rebellion and Death

The use of the death penalty, also called capital punishment, denies basic human rights principles, including the right to life and dignity and freedom from cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment. Anti-death penalty activists also argue that it discriminates against minorities and the poor, that it is subject to gross error, and that it is ineffective as a deterrent to crime.
