As a professor and coordinator of human rights initiatives at the University of Puerto Rico, I have combined my organizational skills, commitment to education and research in human rights, and active collaboration with the UNESCO Chair for Peace Education at UPR to create spaces for dialogue, learning and advocacy. In 2021, I was honored to receive the HRE USA Flowers Fund Grant, through which we launched the literary contest Sentipensar los derechos humanos, engaging students in creative expression as a path to human rights awareness. Serving on the HRE USA Steering Committee offers an opportunity to contribute my experience in collaborative projects and my dedication to empowering communities, while also strengthening the organization’s presence in Puerto Rico—a U.S. territory marked by profound structural challenges but also by a rich, long-standing tradition of grassroots organizing, community education, and collective action for human dignity and social justice.
