Freedom of Association

“Courage happens when people unite.” – Anonymous

The right to form associations, to organize, and to assemble together with the aim of addressing issues of common concern is a human right protected in international and regional human rights treaties. Both an individual right and a collective right, association is principally manifested through trade unions, free speech, and political parties and associations such as religious groups and sports and social clubs. It is interconnected with other human rights:

  • The right to peaceful assembly
  • The right to join or not to join an association
  • The right to belong to a trade union
