The right to education is a fundamental human right that affects both individuals and societies as a whole. Without education no one can attain what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR, 1948) promises: “the full development of the human personality” (Article 26), nor can nations attain peace and sustainable development. One specific goal of education should be “the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms,” that is, human rights education.
